# Contamination by Wear Particles, Dirt, and Water in Non-Sealed Gearboxes

## Contamination by Wear Particles, Dirt, and Water in Non-Sealed Gearboxes

In poorly sealed gearboxes or under aggressive operating conditions, bearings are exposed to contamination by wear particles, dirt, and water. This causes abrasive wear and accelerated failure.

## Sources of Contamination

- Wear particles from gears and bearings
- Dust and dirt from the environment
- Water and condensate
- Lubricant degradation products

## Solutions

Bearings with enhanced seals are used. Bearings with protective washers are applied. It is recommended to use oil filters and perform regular lubricant replacement.
