# Shaft Currents and Electrical Discharges in Variable Frequency Drive Motors

## Shaft Currents and Electrical Discharges in Variable Frequency Drive Motors

Stray currents that pass through bearings occur in variable frequency drive (inverter) motors. These currents cause electrical erosion — micro-melting on the surfaces of raceways and rollers.

## Causes of Current Occurrence

- Induced currents from pulse-width modulation
- Static electricity
- Improper grounding
- High-frequency interference from the converter

## Solutions

Bearings with electrical insulation are used: ceramic coating on the outer ring or ceramic rollers. Bearings with an aluminum oxide insulating layer are employed. Installation of current-collecting rings and shaft grounding is recommended.
