Proper bearing storage is often overlooked, but it can have a big impact on bearing performance and service life. Even the highest quality bearing can fail prematurely if stored incorrectly before installation. This guide covers the best practices for bearing storage.

1. Keep Bearings in Original Packaging

Bearings are carefully packaged by the manufacturer to protect them from moisture, contamination, and physical damage. Leave bearings in their original sealed packaging until you are ready to install them. This protects them from:

  • Dust and dirt contamination

  • Moisture and humidity

  • Physical damage from impact

  • Corrosion

2. Store in a Clean, Dry Environment

Ideal storage conditions are:

  • Temperature: Between 10°C and 30°C (50°F and 86°F)

  • Humidity: Less than 60% relative humidity

  • Cleanliness: Free from dust, vibration, and chemical fumes

Avoid storing bearings directly on concrete floors, which can absorb moisture. Use pallets or shelves to keep bearings off the floor.

3. Store Horizontally to Prevent Deformation

Large bearings should be stored horizontally. If stored vertically for long periods, the weight of the inner ring can cause deformation, especially for larger bearings with clearance between components.

4. Avoid Storing Near Chemicals or Vibration

Keep bearings away from areas where acids, alkalis, or other chemicals are stored. Even fumes can cause corrosion over time. Also avoid areas with continuous machinery vibration – vibration can cause false brinelling (indentations) on the raceways even when the bearing isn't operating.

5. Long-Term Storage Protection

If you need to store bearings for more than one year, additional protection is recommended:

  • Check the anti-corrosion protection – most new bearings come with preservative oil that provides good protection for 1-2 years

  • For longer storage, consider adding extra corrosion inhibitor or vacuum packaging

  • Periodically inspect stored bearings for signs of corrosion

6. Handling Before Installation

Even after proper storage, incorrect handling just before installation can damage bearings:

  • Always handle bearings with clean, dry hands

  • Never drop bearings or subject them to impact

  • Use clean tools when preparing for installation

  • Inspect the packaging for damage before opening – if packaging is damaged, inspect the bearing carefully for contamination or damage
